BBC NEWS | Technology | Serious security flaw found in IE

I like how the title is "Serious Security Flaw...." Aren't they all serious?

I know most people are no longer using Internet Explorer anymore but just FYI.

Article said "What we've seen from the exploit so far is it stealing game passwords, but it's inevitable that it will be adapted by criminals," he said. "It's just a question of modifying the payload the trojan installs."

I figure FFXI is probably one of those games, so everybody be careful, we don't need any more stolen accounts!

"If users can find an alternative browser, then that's good mitigation against the threat."

But Microsoft counselled against taking such action. "I cannot recommend people switch due to this one flaw," said John Curran, head of Microsoft UK's Windows group.

I think that statement is a little stupid. If people keep using IE7 when there is a flaw, eventually something may happen. To prevent risking something like that, why not just switch browsers until they fix it or forever like some people have done awhile ago.

Fixed. They know damn well that users should switch browsers, they just don't want them to.

Oh, that's funny. I guess if you're only stealing game passwords, then you're not an actual criminal.

Sure there is, you just have to make sure your computer never connects to a network, is exposed to foreign media, or is turned on.

FYI, I use IE. I don't care what anyone thinks and I don't want to use Firefox. If you have the proper programs on your computer, you are just fine with IE. I haven't had any issues for years while my husband has with his Firefox. (Though in FF's defense, my husband is an idiot.)

Use what you want, and Mhurron is right that no software is ever safe. But an always up-to-date copy of FF3 with NoScript keeps me ahead of the game. I'd recommend it.

Yeah, IE has been bad news for a long while, but then I've never been totally happy with any web browser. Even lynx, which was my favorite for a long while (but then I used to be a big fan of Gopher), is horrendously insecure (just has an obscurity advantage). NoScript helps, though.

                              This.

FF updated + nice No Script and Ad Blocker (just because I hate ads, for that latter app).

Nothing is ever 100% safe, but it's best to do what you can on your end.
